भौतिक वर्गीकरण के आधार पर पदार्थ को मुख्य रूप से तीन अवस्थाओं में विभाजित किया गया है: ठोस, द्रव और गैस।
मुख्य बिंदु:
ठोस (Solid): इनका आकार और आयतन निश्चित होता है और कण बहुत पास-पास होते हैं।
द्रव (Liquid): इनका आयतन निश्चित होता है लेकिन आकार निश्चित नहीं होता (यह उस बर्तन का आकार ले लेते हैं जिसमें इन्हें रखा जाता है)।
गैस (Gas): इनका न तो निश्चित आकार होता है और न ही निश्चित आयतन।
