नगरपालिकाओं की अवधि: भारतीय संविधान के अनुच्छेद 243U में नगरपालिकाओं के कार्यकाल (अवधि) का स्पष्ट प्रावधान किया गया है।
कार्यकाल की सीमा: इसके अनुसार, प्रत्येक नगरपालिका अपने पहली बैठक के लिए नियत तारीख से 5 वर्ष तक बनी रह सकती है।
समय पूर्व विघटन: यदि किसी नगरपालिका को समय से पहले विघटित (भंग) किया जाता है, तो विघटन की तारीख से 6 महीने के भीतर नए चुनाव कराना अनिवार्य होता है।
