इसका मुख्य कार्य देश के वन संसाधनों का मूल्यांकन, निगरानी और आकलन करना है। यह संगठन हर दो साल पर भारत की आधिकारिक 'इंडिया स्टेट ऑफ़ फॉरेस्ट रिपोर्ट' (ISFR) प्रकाशित करता है।
