प्रथम विभाजन (1907): भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस का पहला औपचारिक विभाजन 1907 के सूरत अधिवेशन में गरम दल और नरम दल के बीच वैचारिक मतभेदों के कारण हुआ था।
दूसरा विभाजन (1918): कांग्रेस का दूसरा विभाजन वर्ष 1918 के बंबई विशेष अधिवेशन में हुआ। यह विभाजन ब्रिटिश सरकार के 'मोंटेगु-चेम्सफोर्ड सुधार प्रस्ताव' (Government of India Act 1919 का आधार) को स्वीकार करने या अस्वीकार करने के मुद्दे पर हुआ था। इस प्रस्ताव पर कांग्रेस के भीतर दो विरोधी विचार उभर कर आए, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप कांग्रेस से एक बार फिर कुछ उदारवादी नेताओं ने दूरी बना ली।
