भारत के संविधान में 74वां संवैधानिक संशोधन अधिनियम, 1992 के माध्यम से भाग IX-A जोड़ा गया, जिसका शीर्षक "नगरपालिकाएँ" (Municipalities) है।
यह संशोधन शहरी क्षेत्रों में स्थानीय स्वशासन को संवैधानिक दर्जा प्रदान करने के लिए लाया गया था और यह 1 जून 1993 से प्रभावी हुआ।
इसके अंतर्गत संविधान में अनुच्छेद 243-P से 243-ZG तक के प्रावधान जोड़े गए।
