यह एक गैर-समकालिक (Non-synchronous / आंशिक) जनगणना थी क्योंकि देश के अलग-अलग हिस्सों में यह अलग-अलग वर्षों में पूरी की गई थी और एक साथ पूरे देश में एक निश्चित वर्ष में नहीं हुई थी।
इसके बाद पहली बार देशव्यापी पूर्ण और समकालिक (Synchronous) जनगणना 1881 में लॉर्ड रिपन के कार्यकाल में शुरू हुई थी।
