मुख्य बिंदु: क्लोनिंग तकनीक (Cloning Technique) वह प्रक्रिया है जिसके द्वारा किसी जीव की आनुवंशिक रूप से बिल्कुल समान (Genetically identical) संतान या प्रतिरूप तैयार किया जाता है।
इस तकनीक में जीव की कायिक (Somatic) कोशिका का उपयोग किया जाता है। कायिक कोशिका शरीर की कोई भी सामान्य शारीरिक कोशिका होती है (जैसे त्वचा या अंग की कोशिका), जिसमें गुणसूत्रों (Chromosomes) का पूरा सेट मौजूद होता है।
इसके विपरीत, शुक्राणु और अंडा कोशिकाएं जनन कोशिकाएं (Germ cells) होती हैं, जिनमें आधे गुणसूत्र होते हैं।
