भारत में स्थानीय स्वशासन (पंचायती राज और नगर पालिका) को संवैधानिक दर्जा 73वें और 74वें संविधान संशोधन अधिनियम, 1992 के माध्यम से प्रदान किया गया था।
मुख्य बिंदु:
73वां संविधान संशोधन: इसके द्वारा ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में पंचायती राज व्यवस्था को संवैधानिक दर्जा दिया गया और संविधान में 'भाग IX' तथा 'अनुसूची 11' जोड़ी गई।
74वां संविधान संशोधन: इसके द्वारा शहरी क्षेत्रों में स्थानीय स्वशासन (नगर पालिकाओं) को संवैधानिक दर्जा दिया गया और संविधान में 'भाग IX-A' तथा 'अनुसूची 12' जोड़ी गई।
ये दोनों संशोधन 1993 में लागू हुए थे।
