भारतीय संविधान के अनुच्छेद 243U में नगरपालिकाओं की अवधि (कार्यकाल) का प्रावधान किया गया है।
इसके अनुसार, प्रत्येक नगरपालिका की सामान्य अवधि अपने पहली बैठक के लिए नियत तारीख से 5 वर्ष की होती है।
हालांकि, यदि किसी नगरपालिका को समय से पहले विघटित (भंग) कर दिया जाता है, तो विघटन की तारीख से 6 महीने के भीतर नए चुनाव कराना अनिवार्य होता है।
