पारंपरिक नियमों में ढील: इससे पहले भारत में केवल वही व्यक्ति अदालत में जा सकता था जिसके अधिकारों का सीधा उल्लंघन हुआ हो (लोकस स्टैंडी का नियम)। पीआईएल के आने के बाद, समाज के किसी भी जिम्मेदार नागरिक या संगठन द्वारा गरीबों, असहायों और पीड़ितों के पक्ष में अदालत का दरवाजा खटखटाने की अनुमति मिल गई।
