Which of the following statements accurately captures the structural and functional contrast between Donald Broadbent's and Anne Treisman's models of attention?
- 1Broadbent's model posits that an Attenuating Filter weakens unattended messages before they reach the Sensory Store, whereas Treisman's model suggests a Selective Filter completely blocks irrelevant stimuli prior to the Hierarchy of Analyzers.
- 2Broadbent's model features a Selective Filter that completely blocks unattended messages based on physical properties prior to higher-level processing, whereas Treisman's model utilizes an Attenuating Filter that weakens unattended inputs, allowing stimuli with lower thresholds to be processed by a Hierarchy of Analyzers.✓
- 3Broadbent's model relies on a Dictionary Unit to process unattended messages with high thresholds, whereas Treisman's model proposes that all incoming sensory information is completely blocked by a Bottleneck before reaching the Sensory Store.
- 4Both Broadbent and Treisman conclude that a central filter completely eliminates unattended sensory inputs, but Treisman argues this complete blocking occurs during higher-level semantic analysis rather than based on physical characteristics.
Correct answer
Broadbent's model features a Selective Filter that completely blocks unattended messages based on physical properties prior to higher-level processing, whereas Treisman's model utilizes an Attenuating Filter that weakens unattended inputs, allowing stimuli with lower thresholds to be processed by a Hierarchy of Analyzers.
