इस विभाजन का मुख्य उद्देश्य बंगाल के बढ़ते हुए राष्ट्रीय प्रभाव को कमजोर करना और 'बाटो और राज करो' की नीति को आगे बढ़ाना था।
इसके विरोध में 7 अगस्त 1905 को कलकत्ता के टाउन हॉल में एक ऐतिहासिक बैठक में स्वदेशी आंदोलन का औपचारिक प्रस्ताव पारित किया गया।
इस आंदोलन के दौरान ब्रिटिश वस्तुओं का बहिष्कार किया गया और स्वदेशी वस्तुओं तथा संस्थानों के उपयोग को बढ़ावा दिया गया।
