विवाद का कारण: इन नई राइफलों के कारतूसों को लोड करने से पहले उनके कवर को दांतों से काटना पड़ता था। ऐसी अफवाह फैल गई थी (जो बाद में सत्य साबित हुई) कि इन कारतूसों में गाय और सुअर की चरबी का प्रयोग किया गया है।
धार्मिक भावनाओं पर आघात: यह बात हिंदू और मुस्लिम दोनों सैनिकों की धार्मिक भावनाओं के विरुद्ध थी, क्योंकि गाय हिंदुओं के लिए पवित्र थी और सुअर का मांस मुसलमानों के लिए निषेध था। इसी असंतोष ने 1857 के महान विद्रोह की चिंगारी का काम किया।
