सामान्य कार्यकाल: भारतीय संविधान के अनुच्छेद 243E के अनुसार, प्रत्येक पंचायत का सामान्य कार्यकाल उसकी पहली बैठक के लिए तय की गई तारीख से 5 वर्ष का होता है।
समयपूर्व विघटन: यदि किसी कारणवश 5 वर्ष का कार्यकाल पूरा होने से पहले पंचायत को विघटित (भंग) कर दिया जाता है, तो विघटन की तारीख से 6 महीने के भीतर नए चुनाव कराना अनिवार्य होता है। इस प्रकार चुनी गई नई पंचायत शेष बचे हुए कार्यकाल के लिए ही कार्य करती है, न कि पूरे 5 वर्षों के लिए।
