पृथ्वी के घूर्णन के कारण उत्पन्न होने वाले कोरिओलिस बल (Coriolis Force) के प्रभाव से उत्तरी गोलार्ध में ये उत्तर-पूर्व से दक्षिण-पश्चिम की ओर तथा दक्षिणी गोलार्ध में दक्षिण-पूर्व से उत्तर-पश्चिम की ओर विक्षेपित हो जाती हैं।
इनका नाम 'व्यापारिक' (Trade) इसलिए पड़ा क्योंकि प्राचीन काल में नाविक और व्यापारी इन नियमित हवाओं का उपयोग अपने समुद्री जहाजों को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए करते थे।
