सातवाँ संविधान संशोधन अधिनियम, 1956 द्वारा राज्यों का पुनर्गठन भाषाई आधार पर किया गया था। इस अधिनियम के मुख्य बिंदु निम्नलिखित हैं:
राज्यों की श्रेणियों की समाप्ति: इसके द्वारा मूल संविधान में राज्यों के लिए निर्धारित 'क', 'ख', 'ग' और 'घ' श्रेणियों को समाप्त कर दिया गया और इसके स्थान पर 14 राज्य तथा 6 संघ राज्य क्षेत्र (केंद्र शासित प्रदेश) बनाए गए।
जम्मू-कश्मीर का एकीकरण: इसी संशोधन के माध्यम से जम्मू-कश्मीर को भारतीय संघ के एक औपचारिक और पूर्ण राज्य के रूप में आधिकारिक रूप से शामिल किया गया।
अन्य प्रावधान: इसके तहत उच्च न्यायालयों के न्यायाधीशों के क्षेत्राधिकार का विस्तार और दो या दो से अधिक राज्यों के लिए एक ही उच्च न्यायालय की स्थापना का भी प्रावधान किया गया था।
