Odia · Reading Comprehension
Read the given passage and answer the question that follows: Fresh vegetables and fruits consumption is increasing among people due to health consciousness. Attractive colors of fruits sold in the market attract consumers. These fruits are treated with various chemicals. While traders profit in this process, consumers pay a heavy price because the chemicals used to ripen and color the fruits are hazardous to health. Such artificially ripened fruits are toxic. Similarly, to keep vegetables green, they are treated with copper sulfate and certain pesticides. This treatment is more prevalent in vegetables like brinjal, pointed gourd, bitter gourd, lady's finger, cucumber, etc. Chemical substances used for artificial ripening and prolonged preservation reduce the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables. Artificially ripened fruits lack natural aroma and taste. Uncontrolled hydrocarbons, acetylene, ethylene, etc., are used for ripening. Previously, calcium carbide was used to ripen bananas and mangoes. But as the government banned it, ethylene and ethephon are being used nowadays. Fruits that look attractive from the outside are not good for health. Naturally ripened fruits might not look very appealing, but they are flavorful and safe for health.
