Chemistry · Organic Chemistry - Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers
Propan-1-ol reacts with H3PO4 (or POCl3 in pyridine) upon heating to give propene (X). Propene on reaction with HBr in the presence of peroxide or normal addition gives 2-bromopropane (Z). Identify X and Z respectively:
- 1X = Propene (CH3CH=CH2); Z = 2-Bromopropane (CH3-CH(Br)-CH3)✓
- 2X = H3PO3; Z = 1-Bromopropane (CH3CH2CH2Br)
- 3X = H3PO3; Z = 2-Bromopropane (CH3-CH(Br)-CH3)
- 4X = Propene (CH3CH=CH2); Z = 1-Bromopropane (CH3CH2CH2Br)
Correct answer
X = Propene (CH3CH=CH2); Z = 2-Bromopropane (CH3-CH(Br)-CH3)
