संविधान के अनुसार, पंचायतों में महिलाओं के लिए सीटों का आरक्षण निम्न में से कम नहीं होगा:

भारतीय संविधान के अनुच्छेद 243G (तथा 73वें संविधान संशोधन अधिनियम,
- 1992) के तहत पंचायतों में महिलाओं की भागीदारी सुनिश्चित करने के लिए यह प्रावधान किया गया है।
इसके अंतर्गत, पंचायतों के सभी स्तरों (ग्राम पंचायत, पंचायत समिति और जिला परिषद) पर प्रत्यक्ष रूप से चुने जाने वाले कुल स्थानों की संख्या का कम से कम एक-तिहाई (33%) भाग महिलाओं के लिए आरक्षित होना अनिवार्य है।
यह आरक्षण एससी (अनुसूचित जातियों) और एसटी (अनुसूचित जनजातियों) के लिए आरक्षित सीटों पर भी लागू होता है।
