संविधान के 73वें संशोधन अधिनियम, 1992 के तहत पंचायतों में महिलाओं के लिए सीटों के आरक्षण का प्रावधान किया गया है।
एक तिहाई आरक्षण: इस अधिनियम के अनुच्छेद 243-घ (Article 243D) के अनुसार, पंचायतों के सभी स्तरों (ग्राम, खंड और जिला) पर कुल सीटों का कम से कम एक तिहाई (यानी 33%) हिस्सा महिलाओं के लिए अनिवार्य रूप से आरक्षित किया गया है।
अध्यक्ष पद पर भी आरक्षण: महिलाओं के लिए यही एक तिहाई (33%) आरक्षण पंचायतों के अध्यक्षों के पदों पर भी लागू होता है।
उद्देश्य: इसका मुख्य उद्देश्य जमीनी स्तर पर स्थानीय शासन और निर्णय लेने की प्रक्रिया में महिलाओं की सक्रिय भागीदारी को सुनिश्चित करना और उनका सामाजिक-राजनीतिक सशक्तिकरण करना है।
