Physics · Electrostatics
A thin metal ring carrying a positive charge and having radius R is fixed in the x-y plane with its center at the origin O. A negatively charged particle is initially placed at rest at a point along the z-axis at coordinates (0, 0, z0), where z0 > 0. The particle is then released. Based on the influence of the electric field due to the charged ring, determine the nature of the motion of the negatively charged particle.
- 1Such that the particle crosses the origin and continues moving along the negative z-axis towards z = -∞.
- 2Approximately simple harmonic provided z0 is much smaller than R.✓
- 3Simple harmonic for all values of z0 such that 0 < z0 ≤ R.
- 4Periodic for all values of z0 such that 0 < z0 < ∞.
Correct answer
Approximately simple harmonic provided z0 is much smaller than R.
