Physics · Wave Mechanics
A string of length L is stretched and fastened to two points x = 0 and x = L. Motion is started by displacing the string in the form y = a sin(πxL), from which it is released at time t = 0. The displacement y(x, t) of any point at a distance x from one end at time t is given by:
- 1y(x, t) = a cos(πcL) sin(πxL)
- 2y(x, t) = a cos(ctL) sin(xL)
- 3y(x, t) = a cos(πctL) sin(πxL)✓
- 4y(x, t) = cos(πctL) sin(πxL)
Correct answer
y(x, t) = a cos(πctL) sin(πxL)
