ऐतिहासिक महत्व: वर्ष 1881 में लॉर्ड रिपन के कार्यकाल में भारत में पहली समकालिक (Synchronous) जनगणना कराई गई थी, यानी देश भर में एक साथ जनगणना की शुरुआत हुई।
प्रथम जनगणना: भारत में सबसे पहली जनगणना 1872 में लॉर्ड मेयो के शासनकाल में हुई थी, लेकिन 1881 की जनगणना को पहली पूर्ण और व्यवस्थित जनगणना माना जाता है।
हेनरी वाल्टर: इन्हें भारत की पहली जनगणना (1830 के Dacca Census) के संदर्भ में जाना जाता है, लेकिन 1881 के लिए औपचारिक जनगणना आयुक्त डब्ल्यू. सी. प्लोडन थे।
