प्रथम गैर-समकालिक जनगणना: भारत में पहली बार जनसंख्या की गणना 1872 में लॉर्ड मेयो के वायसराय कार्यकाल के दौरान शुरू की गई थी।
मुख्य बिंदु:
हालांकि यह जनगणना देश के अलग-अलग हिस्सों में अलग-अलग समय पर की गई थी (इसलिए इसे गैर-समकालिक या Non-synchronous कहा जाता है), यह भारत की जनगणना के इतिहास की शुरुआत थी।
इसके बाद पहली बार व्यवस्थित और संपूर्ण समकालिक (Synchronous) जनगणना 1881 में लॉर्ड रिपन के कार्यकाल में कराई गई थी, जिसके बाद से प्रत्येक 10 वर्ष पर जनगणना की जाती है।
