भारत की पहली जनगणना वर्ष 1872 में ब्रिटिश भारत के तत्कालीन वायसराय लॉर्ड मेयो के कार्यकाल में हुई थी।
इसे 'गैर-समकालिक' (Non-synchronous) जनगणना इसलिए कहा जाता है क्योंकि यह देश के अलग-अलग हिस्सों में अलग-अलग वर्षों में पूरी की गई थी, न कि एक ही निश्चित वर्ष में पूरे देश में एक साथ।
इसके बाद देश की पहली नियमित और पूर्ण (समकालिक) जनगणना वर्ष 1881 में लॉर्ड रिपन के कार्यकाल में शुरू हुई थी।
